Magpas Air Ambulance provides the very best pre-hospital emergency care, in the air or on land, including treatments usually only available in hospital. Operating 24/7, the charity answers five calls for help a day on average, treating around 1,100 patients in life-threatening emergencies every year.

Magpas Air Ambulance primarily serve the communities of Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Peterborough, but their call outs also cover over 12 counties in and around the East of England. The advanced medical team is dispatched by both the East of England and the East Midlands Ambulance Service Trusts, caring for a population of over 10 million.

The charity was formed in 1971 by two local doctors who wanted to do more for people involved in serious road traffic collisions. Their idea was to quickly bring doctors to the scene of an accident, giving patients a much better chance of survival and reducing the impact of their injuries—an idea which remains at the heart of their air ambulance service today.

Today, the Magpas Air Ambulance advanced medical team combines the skills of a senior doctor and critical care paramedic together on every shift, attending incidents by air ambulance or rapid response vehicle, 24/7. All members of the team are specially trained in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM). This means they can support the ambulance service by bringing advanced A&E level care directly to their patients’ side when time is of the essence.

The oldest emergency medical charity of its kind, since 1971 Magpas Air Ambulance has saved or changed the lives of over 60,000 seriously ill or injured people, their families and loved ones. During that time the charity has also been instrumental in developing pre-hospital emergency medical training and standards across the country and continues to lead the way and promote best practice today.
